Our Production Journey-

The journey of ‘The Doormen’ Began in April of 2011 at a Midtown sketch comedy/ variety show called 'The Victor Verhaeghe Hour'. Joe Boover was enlisted by one of Victor's friends to play a comedic song as a featured act in the show, Victor thought the song was funny and asked Joe to do another as part of his show next month, Joe excitedly agreed. One week before said show, Victor emailed a potential new sketch titled, "Doorman Dance" to Joe to see if he’d be interested in giving it a read- the next day, They met up in a studio at the New York Film Academy and an undeniable chemistry and kindredness was born. Without missing a beat they, choreographed an eccentric Electro Pop 'All My Single-Ladies' inspired synchronized doorman dance- sang their hearts out improvising A-Capella musical parodies ranging from 'Les Mis' to 'Chicago' to 'West Side Story''. That night they discovered two ridiculous characters that ever since- they just haven’t been able to let go of.

Over a decade later that 3-minute sketch has evolved MANY times. From a variety show that revolved around the two rival doormen, their buildings, the many tenants and other wacky personalities (like softball junkies, Amish stand-up comedians and colorful spandex-clad doorman gods) -  into a half-baked Pseudo Musical that was glowingly reviewed in the NYC Fringe Festival in 2014 (Winning FringeReviewUS’s ‘Top 5 of the Fringe’). In 2017 Joe Boover met Jason Cohen working in regional theatre. The two of them conceived directed and produced a horrifying claymation (which shall not be named). Shortly after, Joe invited Jason to join the Doormen team and his feedback/ musical skills were instrumental (pun) in shaping the show into the original full-length musical that you’ll be able to see this May.

We hope you'll get tickets today so you can witness  for yourself this love child of absurdist comedy and musical theatre!
